| An Interview with Dr. Jyoti Sharma, Assistant Professor, School of Business |
Dr. Jyoti Sharma is an Assistant Professor in the School of Business at the University. Dr. Sharma has done her Doctorate from Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar and her Post Graduate from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. She is an excellent academician and has been one of the earliest faculty members at the School of Business. Dr. Sharma shares her ideas & thoughts with us. Dr. Sharma, many thanks for taking time out and speaking to us. Madam, tell us a little bit about your Academic and Research background? Dr. Sharma: As far as my academic and research background is concerned, I did graduation and Post Graduation from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Then I passed UGC-JRF exam and joined Department of Commerce and Business Management, Guru Nanak Dev University as a Regular Research Fellow for the award of my Ph.D degree in the area of Industrial Relations. During my stay of around three and half years in the department, I also used to teach MBA students as a part-time faculty in the department itself. As a part of the research team in the GND university one of my concerns was to provide guidance to the students for their major research projects, helping students in framing of questionnaire applying SPSS, E-views, STATA, MINITAB, etc., in most cases to analyze the same. I also worked as one of the faculty members of PG department of G.G.S. Khalsa College, Amritsar for one year. I joined Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in 2005. Dr. Sharma, Can you tell us a little bit about the field of Management and particularly about Human Resources Management which is your field of expertise? What are the Career options for students in HR currently? Dr. Sharma: Management is the study of interaction of material and human resources which can play a very important role in the growth and development of not only organizations but also for people working there. Human Resource Management is playing a strategic role in managing organizations now-a-days due to the fact that well-trained and highly motivated staff is considered as brand ambassador and internal advertiser for the development of an organization. This has made human resource management a vital function in all types of organizations. The specialization in human resource management prepares students for generalists as well as for specialist’s jobs in organizations. A variety of HRM careers is available in both the public and private sectors and across a range of organizations within those industries. The career path for students with HR specialization leads from technical HR job to positions in senior HR management. The students with HR specialization can make their careers in policy development and planning, management consultants, industrial relations practitioner, change management practitioner, recruitment/selection, administrative service management, training and development, compensation analyst, etc. What are the current research projects that you are working on? What are the research areas that the School is focusing on? Dr. Sharma: Recently, I alongwith research team of two more faculty members have completed major project on Stress Management with the financial support of AICTE, New Delhi. Presently I am engaged in another project sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi on Technological Changes and Employees perspectives. Besides, work-addiction, industrial relations, employee related issues have always remained my interest areas of research. Besides, at college level in order to provide a platform to students to disseminate their knowledge, learning and understanding of various issues related to corporate world in particular and management in general, students’ e-journal Abhivyakati- A Search for Excellence has been started. Further, researchers from all over the regions are discussing and throwing light on the challenges, and issues in and around the business organizations through Arth Anvesan- A Bi-annual journal of College of Management. Presently all the faculty members of College of Management are engaged in research projects in the area of Micro Financing, Corporate Social Responsibility, Police Ethics, Supply Chain Management, Retail Management, Sickness in SMEs, etc. under the financial grants of various agencies, such as ICSSR, UGC, AICTE, BPRD, etc. Dr. Sharma, What is your impression about the students here at SMVDU and what is your advice to them for achieving success in their career? Dr. Sharma: Students here at SMVDU are innovative, full of enthusiasm with urge to learn things constantly. My advice to them is to work hard and try to know what actually they want to do in their life. The precise knowledge about the aim and goals of their life with holistic approach will help them to excel in life. Besides, they should see the practical aspects of knowledge provided by the faculty members of College of Management. They should think globally but act locally in order to succeed in every sphere of their life. Dr. Sharma, What is your advice for achieving success in the mission and vision of SMVDU? Dr. Sharma: If one compares the growth and development of other universities/institutes with same inception period, one can easily point out what actually SMVDU is able to get in such a short span of time. It has been because of the dedicated efforts of all the persons involved directly or indirectly that the university has made such a marvelous success. This constant collaboration with which we are able to cross some miles till now is also very much needed in future efforts through which university will be able achieve new heights. Besides, under existing dynamic and vibrant leadership the university can grow and develop to the international standards. Dr. Sharma: Madam, Many thanks for sparing your precious time to speak to us and for advising the students. Dr. Sharma: pleasure to talk to you. |
